A jar contains 100cm² of mixture of oil and water in the ratio 1:4. Enough oil is added to make the ratio of oil to water 1:2. How much water must be added to make the ratio of oil to water 1:3?

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

FIRST: 100cm^2 is first in the ratio of oil to water as 1:4 This means that now water is more. SECOND: 100cm^2 ratio is 1:2 Still water is more 1:2 means that 100is divided into 3 parts first and then 1 part goes to oil and 2 parts go to water. So 33cm2 --> Oil and 66cm2 ---> water THIRD: wE hAVE to make it 1:3 1 part to oil 3 parts to water So 1/4 * 100 = 25cm^2 to oil 3/4 * 100 = 75cm2 to water. Now they are asking, HOW MUCH water is added? The answer would be: Original amount - Previous amount = 75-66 = 9cm2 is added to water to make the ratio 1:3 Understood? :)
