Color is what kind of data? A ratio or a nominal data?
I think it is ratio, since it can be measured through wavelengths.
As best I remember, color is a nominal attribute. Did you check your text?
Nominal Data A set of data is said to be nominal if the values / observations belonging to it can be assigned a code in the form of a number where the numbers are simply labels. You can count but not order or measure nominal data. For example, in a data set males could be coded as 0, females as 1; marital status of an individual could be coded as Y if married, N if single. This is from: http://www.stats.gla.ac.uk/steps/glossary/presenting_data.html#nomdat
My high school teachers taught me it is nominal. But according to my understanding in physics, color can be measured through wavelengths. Does this describe the nominal data's definition?
You'll need to take up that issue with your former teachers.
in physics when u talk about wavelenghts, it is a ratio when u take a survey of favorite color, it is nominal
in physics all colors are sorted based on wavelenghts, clearly its a ratio. but when u take a survey of fav color, you dont bother about wavelengths, order doesnt matter. u just randomly take the score
So, do you mean in stats, it's a nominal data?
yes for sure, color is nominal data Notice that taking mean and processing the wavelength/frequency values makes good sense when u are talking about physics experiments but taking mean of wavelengths in statistics survey makes no sense
Okay. Thank you. :))
np :) think extreme :- take mean of color of 100 ppl who participated in survey ? wat wud u do, u wanto take mean of wavelenghts ? wat wud u do wid that mean ? its not USEFUL instead, we treat color as nominal, and construct a frequency table... and work on it in stats
Yes yes yes. I believe in you. :)
say, two ppl participated in color survey, their fav colors are : Violet, Red if u take mean of wavelengths, u wud get Green. how useful is that ? instead, in stats, when dealing wid nominal data like this we can simply say that 50% like Violet, 50% like Red. which is more meaningful
Just wanted to make sure u see wat i mean lol
HAHAHAHA. Don't worry, I already understood it since your 1st reply. :D
cool/ :)
