OpenStudy (amriju):

d..do u know the defn of tan x in a triangle??

Directrix (directrix):

@amriju If Triangle ACB is a 45-45-90 triangle as the data on the diagram indicates, then why would BC not be equal to AC = 4. Four is not an option but why not, do you think?

OpenStudy (amriju):

4 tan 45..is obviously 4...coz tan 45 is 1...they are checking if we know the defn of tan x...see there's an option 4/tan 45...thats 4 too...but its wrong..

OpenStudy (amriju):

@Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

@amriju If options c and d both simplify to 4, then how did you choose option d and not option c as well?

OpenStudy (yttrium):

Well, just depend on the given. The given are just the angle and it's adjacent side, and where looking for the opposite side. With that reference, we can say that the answer should be d.

OpenStudy (amriju):

tan x= perpendicular/base...so perp=base*tan x....we r required to find the perp...so base/tan x is not the answer...even if tan x=1...

Directrix (directrix):

Look at the attached diagram.

OpenStudy (yttrium):

But what answer would you choose in that case, is that C or D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it d?

OpenStudy (amriju):

yep

OpenStudy (amriju):

look...just coz the results are same doesn't nessacary mean both r same...the process is vital...thats why the problem is given..

Directrix (directrix):

@amriju How can you say d is correct and not c? I think the question is in error and was meant to ask for AB.

OpenStudy (yttrium):

Yes it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait im confused now whats the answer?

OpenStudy (amriju):

becoz...the results may be same...but 4/tan 45 is not he correct answer...had the angle been 30..the results would have been different...its just coz tan 45 is 1 that we have a co-incidence...

OpenStudy (amriju):

its d...

OpenStudy (amriju):

lets say you solved a equation..its result came out to be 4/x...now at x=1...4/x=4x...so would you write 4x instead of 4/x for the solution...even if u are required to find the value at x=1??

Directrix (directrix):

This question is poorly written. It is possible to argue that both c and d are answers to the question. Going with the formation of the trig ratios and trying to read the question author's mind, then tan 45 = BC/4. Solve for BC. This technique is analogous to that in previous and subsequent problems but we still should not have to guess what the anonymous question author intends. That would be BC = 4 * tan(45) as previously stated by @amriju
