My first and probably only question! My school did not cover this at all -.- Question- "Ship A receives a distress signal from the east and ship B receives a distress signal from the same vessel from the northwest. At what location is the vessel in distress located? Describe how you arrived at your conclusion using complete sentences, Which theorem or postulate does this demonstrate? You must show all work and steps in order to receive credit." Yeah I have no idea .. :l
Picture that goes with it :)
where do you think the vessel is located? pro-tip: extend the arrows a bit
Since signal travels in a straight line(simply put), you just have to trace where it could be coming from. Since it's from the same source, how do you think the signals look like in the place origin?
(4, 2) ? I got that when the lines intersected
That sounds reasonable...if there was a ship at that location sending out a distress call would that get the results we were given?
Yes
why does tracing two non-parallel lines pin POINT a location? oh that has some hints in it! :-)
Wouldn't it be perpendicular lines?
only if those lines crossed at right angles....but the first line is straight across and the other angles at 45...so just not parallel
Its not perpendicular because it isn't a right angle, and not just parallel... From point D to B it looks like an acute angle right?
So basically I got the first question they asked, Thank god. But the part that says "Which theorem or postulate does this demonstrate? You must show all work and steps in order to receive credit"
I don't think that the size of the angle matters much. If boat c was at (6,3) the angle is obtuse to a but acute to b....I think that the theorem that you are searching for is that two non-parallel lines will cross at exactly one point.
As for the thinking it through part...well you did all that I don't know what you were thinking...but here is a little of what I was thinking: if a signal is coming in from the east...I really don't know how far away it came from...so I'll have to extend my line as far as it will go. Then I would have to do the same thing for the other line...and oh look - they cross at some point. That point must have something in common with the signal to both ships. And then I remembered that I don't know much about geometry but I do know that two lines that are not parallel only cross at one point so I'd use that are my geometry rule. Then I would remember to use capital letters at the start and periods at the end of my sentences and call it good.
Makes so much sense, yeah idk why my mind was somewhere else. Thank you sooo much!
