what is translation of function?

OpenStudy (john_es):

Suppose you have a function of the type y=f(x). Then you can translate its graph through the x axis or the y axis. When you translate a function in the x axis you move the graph to left or right. For example, \[y=f(x-a)\] will move your graph "a" units to the right (supposing a is positive). If you want to translate your function along the y axis, you only have to add a number to your function, in this way, \[y=f(x)+a\] This will move up "a" units the graph of the funciton (supposing a is positive).
