Public Domain The effects of the Supreme Court cases of McCulloch v. Maryland and Gibbons v. Ogden were felt in the presidency of Andrew Jackson. During his time in office, Jackson faced many economic and political issues. Americans debated the role government should have in the economy. The Nullification Crisis and Bank War showed Jackson’s commitment to states’ rights, but not at the expense of one solid union. You should now be able to describe the consequences of the Supreme Court cases McCulloch vs. Maryland and Gibbons v. Ogden, including their economic impact. Use this knowledge to complete this activity. Imagine you are a farmer in 1836. You raise corn and cattle in eastern Kentucky. A businessperson in South Carolina believes you and your neighbors produce the best corn and beef around. He wishes to be a regular customer but needs you to transport your goods to market fresh. Meeting with your neighbors, the group shows interest in building a railroad line from your area to Charleston, South Carolina. Your fellow farmers point out that you will need extra help, though. The route passes through five states, which will each have to approve your request. You will need more money to fund this “internal improvement.” They ask you to find out what issues and options under law affect your plans. The group will meet again in a few days, and you need to be ready. Step One: Study the route plan and compare it with your notes from the lesson. Maryland Gibbons v. Ogden Jackson’s position on internal improvements Nullification Crisis Bank War Step Three: Now create a presentation of your plan that includes the impact of law and government. Be creative and use visuals to capture your neighbors’ attention. You want to show that you have truly thought about issues affecting your business plan. There are many 21st century tools available for creating and submitting your work in the online environment. For more information on tools your school uses, you may contact your instructor or visit the Web 2.0 tools area. Step Four: Show your presentation to a parent or trusted adult in your community. Ask them whether there are issues you are missing that might help enhance your business plan. Include their comments in your presentation.
