Find the sample standard deviation and the population standard deviation of the data set. 17, 37, 56, 16, 12, 16, 19, 45, 14, 37, 21, 26, 43, 46, 42

OpenStudy (amistre64):

define the mean, subtract the mean from each element; square the results; find the mean of the squares ....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the difference between population is sample is: population is a usual mean of the square; whereas the sample divides by 1 less

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay for the mean i got 17.8... is that right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the mean of the set? 29.8 i beleive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if so.. i just do 17-17^2+37-17^2+56-17^2...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i put them in order and then divided it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

subtract the mean from each element

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait let me do it again

OpenStudy (amistre64):

17 - 29.8 37 - 29.8 56 - 29.8 16 - 29.8 etc .... then square those results

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i dont spose you have a ti83 calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have a 30x caculator

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmmm, that sounds like one of those "financial" calcs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay nvm. i got 29

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i have a 30xa that i havent quite figured out how to work stats on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah idk what kind of caculator it is but i have trouble trying to square all of those numbers in it. it gives me an" error domain"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay wow. i thought i was the only one who didnt know how to do it on the caculator. maybe its not suitable for this tpe of caculator

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its better suited for a ti83 or 84; they have much more functionality for this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dang it... and im using my own caculator. the school has the same kind as mine.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you have a button that looks like:\[\sum+\]right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. but i have buttons that say x^2 and the up arrow

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://mathcs.albion.edu/~mbollman/013_12.jpg

OpenStudy (amistre64):

mines the one on the right ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if yours has a data button, that might be a place that you can load your set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

crap i got to go.. im going to make anew acount. can i just message you when i get back on here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay. i wonder how you ddi that!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you can message if you need to

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i just found the users guide to yours i believe
