HELP ASAP gold medal will b awarded.solve for X: 3-(2x-5)<-4(x+2

OpenStudy (zpupster):

first get rid of the brackets by mult using distributive property can you do that??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (zpupster):

-(2x-5) you have to mult by -1 so it changes the signs so = -2x+5 that is on the right hand side on the left mult thru by -4 -4x-8 do you see that step??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (zpupster):

ok our equation now read 3-2x+5<-4x-8 we combine like terms on left -2x+8<-4x-8 now move the x to one side and the constants to the other can you do that??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (zpupster):

how we do this is to subtract 8 from both sides remember if we do it to one side we must do it to the other. -2x+8-8<-4x-8-8 or -2x<-4x-16 can you guess what we will do next??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide?

OpenStudy (zpupster):

no add 4x to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (zpupster):

what do you get??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -2x<20?

OpenStudy (zpupster):

-2x<-4x-16 4x-2x<4x-4x-16 or 2x<-16 here is where we would divide by 2 2x/2<-16/2 now we have x alone x<-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (zpupster):

good job!!
