a fair charges $7.25 for admission and $5.50 for a ride pass. 10 friends visited the fair. not all of the friends purchased ride passes. if their total cost was $105.50, how many friends purchased ride passes?

OpenStudy (nurali):

x = Number of Ride Passes First you multiply $7.25 by the ten friends to get the total admission cost... 7.25*10 = $72.50 Then set up the equation. If each Ride Pass costs $5.50, and you want to find the number of ride passes, you start with 5.50x. Add in the $72.50 admission fee that they all paid. Set it equal to the total cost ($105.50)... 5.50x + 72.5 = 105.50 Subtract $72.50 from each side. The number left over ($33) is how much they spent on ride passes put together... 5.50x = 33 Divide each side by $5.50 to find out how many ride passes they bought... x = 6 6 friends bought ride passes.
