Help with factoring?

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

I need to factor 8y^3 + 26y^2 - 20y Not really sure how to do this :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by factoring out anything that is common to all terms. all of your terms are divisible by 2y so factor that out first and then deal with what's left.

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

okay so 2y^2 * 4y = 8y^3 13y * 2y = 26y^2 -2y * 10 = -20y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

almost... \[8y^3+26y^2-20y=(2y)(4y^2)+(2y)(13y)-(2y)(10) = 2y(4y^2+13y-10)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you sure it's not +20y?

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

nope its -20y

OpenStudy (phi):

4y^2+13y -10 does not factor nicely so you are done however, if it were 4y^2 +13y +20 it would factor nicely

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

so the answer is 2y(4y^2 + 13y - 10)?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, that is the simplest factoring... but I am suspicious they have a typo in the question

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Could be, humans make mistakes

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Thanks guys!
