3 1/2 - 2 2/5=
1.1
@AustinC you should know better than to use decimal approximations. We are given, \(\displaystyle 3\frac{1}{2}-2\frac{2}{5}\) We need to get them into proper fractions, \(\displaystyle \frac{7}{2}-\frac{12}{5}\) Now, to be able to do this subtraction we need a common denominator. Do you know what it would be?
Yes, the common denominator is 10.
Correctomundo, that means that we would have this, \(\displaystyle \frac{35}{10}-\frac{24}{10}=~?\)
@austinL sorry that a 15 year old was trying to help. thanks for feedback i will use your advice in the future.
We started with, \(\displaystyle 3\frac{1}{2}\) To put in in proper fraction form, you multiply the 3&2 and then add 1 to get 7. So therefore, \(\displaystyle \frac{7}{2}\) Then to get the common denominator of 10 we multiply it by \(\displaystyle \frac{5}{5}\) \(\displaystyle \frac{7}{2}\times\frac{5}{5}=\frac{35}{10}\) Same process with the other side, but you multiply it by \(\displaystyle\frac{2}{2}\)
Now, when we have a subtraction of fractions we have this, \(\displaystyle \frac{a}{b}-\frac{c}{b}=\frac{a-c}{b}\) Which when translated to our problem, \(\displaystyle \frac{35}{10}-\frac{24}{10}=\frac{35-24}{10}=~?\)
Ok. Thanks! (: @austinL & @AustinC
