HELP! :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. Which graph is the graph of the inequality y > 2x + 1?

OpenStudy (austinl):

Graph it like you would an equality. y-intercept of 1 slope of 2 Then shade everything above the line because y>...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now would the line be solid or dotted??

OpenStudy (austinl):

\(<,>\rightarrow~\text{dotted}\\ \le,\ge\rightarrow~\text{solid}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, so it would fall on 1 on the y axis and what would it fall on on the x axis?

OpenStudy (austinl):

Well, just graph it out! You have everything that you need to do so, and an easy line at that. I have to go now, hopefully you can find someone else to finish up here! Good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And how do I know if the line goes this way \ or this way /

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Will you help me Kalina? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just want to know how to do it!

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

It's this way / if the slope is positive, \ way if slope is negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, and so how do I know if it is positive or not? How will I be able to tell?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

You were given the slope by the equation...and Austin also pointed it out for you. In the form y=mx+b, m is the slope.

OpenStudy (selrachcw95):

Jon I remember these and they were tough for me too.

OpenStudy (selrachcw95):

Pm me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@wolfe8, ok. Thank you. So I know that 1 is placed on the y axis, but what is placed on the x axis?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Well, what is the value of y when the line intersects the x axis? :) Try sketching it if it would help. When you know what y is, substitute it into the line equation and find x. Of course, this is the hard way :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 2...?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Not quite. Tell me what y is when the line intersects the x axis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no clue! it would still be 1, would it not?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Here's an example of a straight line graph|dw:1381269549898:dw| Can you tell me what y is at that point now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Hmm. I'm not sure how else to show you. Ok at the point I pointed in the picture, tell me the y value at that point.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, 1 or 2

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Wouldn't it be 0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

....? The arrow is not pointing at the middle though. Lol

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Jon, can you make a new post? I need to tell you a lot of things about graphs and the coordinate system
