How does ATP enable transport proteins to move ions across a cell membrane
Remember ATP is the energy molecule of cells and it uses its energetically charged phosphates to 'phosphorylate' other substances. When a transport protein (within the membrane) is phosphorylated it changes the conformation of protein to allow a select molecule or group of molecules through. If it is active transport, the protein pushes these molecules against the concentration gradient. Since ions are charged, they cannot pass the lipid bi-layer and need the help of transport proteins to pass through. Let me know if this helped and if I can answer any more questions!
Read about Na-K ATPase and Ca ATPase. It is a lot 2 explain here. If u do not understand some point then tag me
