The Bill of Rights promises that punishment for a crime cannot be cruel or unusual, meaning that it cannot be painful or degrading to the person's dignity. What punishment would be considered cruel and unusual? A.) Someone who commits assault is beaten as punishment. B.) Someone caught shoplifting is made to pay a fine and write an apology. C.) Someone caught driving while drunk is punished by revoking driving privileges. D.) Someone caught littering is punished by being made to pick up trash on the highway.

Where did you get it can not be painful or degrading? Corporal punishment in public schools use to be hit with ruler, yard stick, paddle and occasionally a slap or punch. these are some I saw in 50's and 60's when things were being changed. The change was standing in front of class with gum on your nose if caught chewing gum, sitting facing the corner for other offense. Or sent to principle office for whatever. As you can see pain was involved and then humiliation. Isolation was also used, but for the time these were not unusual or considered cruel because order had to be maintained. This was/is done with children, are adults any different, and being adult it may even be more extreme.
