4a-3=2b+7 ------------------------ 4a-2b=7+3 4a-2b=10 NOW MY QUESTION IS. i have to divide it by 2, right? WHY? where did the 2 came from? so that it will be 2a-b=5

You can divide by anything you want, as long as you do it on both sides!
