Solve -3x + 1 > 4 and describe the graph of the solution. x < -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the left x < -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the right x > -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the left x > -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the right

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

have you solved the inequality...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.. :s

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... so it just like solving an equation... subtract 1 from both sides of the inequality, what do you get..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 1 from the -3 & 4?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well not quite -3x + 1 > 4 -1 -1 --------------- -3x > 3 now the rule for inequalities when you divide( or multiply) by a negative is to reverse the inequality... so if you divide both sides by -1 what do you think you will have..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mm, hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does the -3x go away?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well it -3 goes leaving x so what happens with 3/-3 =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does the sign (>) flip?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

yes it does...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is it the first answer?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so you have x < -1 and yes thats the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay, thank you! Omg, can you help me with a few more?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

sorry, I have to go to school.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh, okay.. thank you anyways!
