How are the ideologies of socialism, communism, and capitalism similar and different? (6.03)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

With communism, the public basically owns everything. There aren't any private businesses. However, capitalism is all about private ownership of companies. Socialism is essentially a happy median between the two. Private businesses are allowed and the larger businesses are owned by the government.

How did MANIA (militarism, alliances, nationalism, imperialism, and assassination) all contribute to World War I? (7.01)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I'll start with the assassination. There was already pre-existing tension between the countries leading up to WWI due to the spread of imperialism. Ferdinand was assassinated by Princip because Princip was a part of an underground group that wanted an alliance between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia and not Austria-Hungary, which Ferdinand was the ruler of. This assassination began the war. Soon after this alliances began forming. One of the main alliances was the Central Powers, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey. The other alliance was called the Allies, which included the Triple Entente: Britain, France, and Russia and expanded to include about 27 other Allied and Associated powers (including Italy and the USA). These alliances all existed already, but were added to as the war went on and were also a big cause for tension among the countries Like I stated before, the spread of imperialism was also a source of tension between the countries. Imperialism just means that a country's power is determined by how much they control, whether it it in terms of military or diplomacy. Again, I stated that imperialism is partly about a country's military force. The large armies that countries had at this time made them all very weary of each other, but that was the reason behind the alliances. Germany had a large army, which is why Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey (all small countries) sided with them in the war. This was because of geographic advantage and protection from the Allies who surrounded them. If you look at a map, the big three in the Allies surround the Central Powers completely, which terrified them. The Allies were also all large countries with strong militaries. Nationalism is just the belief in one's country. This was a big thing back when WWI was fought. When someone thought that their country was going to war, they assumed that they would win because they had such a strong belief in their country. This fueled arrogance in the citizens, at a time where they could only know what was going on from reading the news. The newspapers at times fed to this arrogance by lying about the events in the war and making it seem like their country was winning. Hope this helps!
