Why do people "welcome" people to OpenStudy but not bother answering their question, especially in popular channels like Math? This really ticks me off.
Sort of like, "Welcome to OS, but don't bother me." sort of feeling?
hmmm I find my self guilty of this sometimes.. but its mostly because I find myself unable to answer peoples questions sometimes (like if its calculus or something) so I feel the least I can do is to not acknowledge their presence unless they acknowledge me first. That way, the person does not have a false hope that I will help them or something.
The issue is just that, not everyone can solve the mathematical problems that are posted. That may frustrate some however, it does not hurt to get a welcome. :) Besides no one should be here to post something really quickly to receive an answer. We should be here to post and maybe your post may just hang around for a bit. It should not be an issue unless you are at some online school cheating on a test.
Patience is a virtue. For harder problems, the person who asks is probably mature enough to realize they will have to wait. For easier problems, somebody will probably get to it soon. Please at least mention that you are unable to help, not just throwing a message giving people a somewhat false hope.
Did you think that all of Ambies can ansur ALL the questions here?
Not all Ambassadors are math graduate students. Not all Ambassadors have studied my level of mathematics. Not all Ambassadors are good with Geometry like Hartnn. The least you can do is welcome them - and find someone who can answer their question.
i have answered this earlier, if anyone is already answering, WAIT till the explanation finishes entirely, then you can jump in and welcome. you can welcome new users even if you couldn't answer them. i would say something like this, ' @... Hi, Welcome To OpenStudy:) <<<could be in latex While you wait to get help from other OS users, which you will get pretty soon, you can browse various features of this site, If you need any help browsing , you can ask (or message) me (or any other ambassador with a purple encircled A before their name.) Hope you have great learning experience with learning on OpenStudy. '
but do not spam this in every new (first) question, i have seen an ambie doing this :P
@deathgrowl @Compassionate My point is that if you don't know the answer, state clearly that you don't.
We usually do :|
*cough* goform…….ah anyhow I like the point you are trying to put across @tyteen4a03 …. a clear statement would be good so that no one gets like false hopes and whatnot of you solving their problem, but we can definitely welcome them, just not to the point of spam :) Thanks for making this thread
I kinda like the welcome notes. And I am cool with Ambis posting welcomes in questions... I also try to find people that i know are smarter than me in Math to help answer a question. We regulars know who the super smart people are - and can ping them. Newbs don't.
If I welcome someone and I am unable to answer their question, I stick around and try to tag people who can help them. .-.
another thing is, that if you're an ambi who is not likely to be able to help in math, it's good to spend time in area where you can both welcome and answer questions. we have a lot of subjects! a lot of folks already have assigned areas. PM me if you need suggestions.
