A basket contains 15 pieces of fruit: 7 apples, 5 oranges, and 3 bananas. Jonas takes a piece of fruit at random from the basket, and then Beth takes a piece at random. What is the probability that Jonas will get an orange and Beth will get an apple?

1/6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

There are 5 oranges out of 15 pieces of fruit. So the probability of picking an orange is 5/15 = 1/3 ----------------------- Once Jonas picks his fruit, there are 15 - 1 = 14 pieces of fruit left There are 7 apples, so the probability of picking an apple (after one piece of fruit is left) is 7/14 = 1/2 ------------------------ Multiply these two probabilities to get... (1/3)*(1/2) = (1*1)/(3*2) = 1/6 So that's why the answer is 1/6

Sorry I meant to say "after one piece of fruit is chosen" and NOT "after one piece of fruit is left", silly typo, but everything else is fine
