If f and g are inverse functions f(7)=10 f(10)=-1 find g(10) is my answer 7?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

g(x) is the inverse of f(x) so that means that the inputs/outputs of f and g will swap

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

example, if you plug in x = 2 into f(x) and you got f(2) = 95 then the output of 95 can be plugged into g(x) to get g(95) = 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the output of 95 is plugged into g(x) to get another output of 2 (which is the original input of f(x))

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hopefully that makes sense, if not, then let me know

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Your answer was correct @mocham if f(7)=10 then \[\large f^{-1}(10)=7\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh sorry I didn't see that you posted an answer, yes, 7 is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=) yay! thank you - I am figuring these out but I don't fully understand them - it should come the more I do them ... right?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yes. If \[\large f(a) = b\]then\[\large f^{-1}(b)=a\]so basically the x and y swap in these.

ohhh okay I like that!
