What was national security like before the CIA was developed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The CIA is more of a secret agency, almost like a ninja, before the CIA, there was more running and gunfights, but when the CIA came in, the criminals didn't know and they couldn't run because they weren't ready...

LOL^ Before the CIA was developed there were still spies... They were usually privately hired people who went behind the lines to gather reconnaissance for their employer. The military has always had something like this, and sometimes company's would travel to different countries to "spy" on opposing companies/organizations. The creation of the CIA just gave the spies for America a headquarters and making it more of a serious issue. Hence the creation of it, after WW2, when nobody could be trusted. The creation of CIA also somewhat shows enemies of the state that it pretty much means business. Basically back then things weren't as organized as they are now. OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you! What was the public reaction to the creation of the CIA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At first people knew what the role of the CIA was but not exactly how and what they really did. So they let it be since everybody was scared with the Vietnam, Korean, and Cold Wars going on. Over time though the public very much disliked and showed hatred towards the CIA. The agency was known for illegally spying and conducting experiments on its own people without their consent and without legal reasoning. They pretty much took the law into their own hands and did what they pleased.

Hope that helps :P
