Sears sells a sweater for $69 and has a 60% markup on the selling price. What is the cost of the sweater to Sears?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of it this way, what is 60% of $69? then you can easily subtract that from 69 to get the unit price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if I calculate 69 minus 60% I get 27.60 so is that the cost to sears or do I subtract the 27.60 from 69?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$69 = price + price*0.60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then the cost of the sweater to Sears was the $27.60 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

close, think of it this way: $69 = 1.0*price + price*0.60 or $69 = 1.6*price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hint, the answer will be between $40 and $50 dollars ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

41.4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So... 69=the price with the mark up. 69=1.6x x=110.4 110.4-69=$ 41.4

Ok thank you, now I get it.
