Write inequality for the graph
can you find the equations of the two lines that box in the shaded area?
i dont know how to do that either lol
hmmm... let me think which way I should teach to help u best! ^_^
please!
do you feel like you know what an inequality is?
yes
will the answer look like this: ___ < x < ___ or this ___ < y < ____ ?
first one?
close! normally it would be the first one if we were using a number line, buut we have a graph, so it will be the second one ^_^
ohhhhhh ok
so we know that the answer will look like ____ < y < ______ so we need to figure out what goes into the blanks. that is where we have to figure out the equation of the line. I'll show you how to do the first blank and then you can copy cat what I did, and you can do the second blank ^_^
OKay Sounds great!
|dw:1383112528084:dw| so for my part, i'm doing the line on the left. the line on the left crosses through the y-axis at 6, do you see it?
Yes i do
so i'm going to use that 6 as a point, at that point, i know y =6 and x=0, so I can write it as (0,6) I'm now also going to use the point (5,1)
I need to find the equation of that line with the two points (0,6) and (5,1) the standard form of a line equation is y=mx+b I have an x and i have a y, but I need a b and an m. m = rise/run, so if i go from point (0,6) to point (5,1) I rise -5 and run 5, so my slope m = -5/5 =-1 m = -1
so now I had y = mx+b but now I have y = -1x+b b is equal to the value of y, when x=0. we know y=6 when x = 0 becuase of our point (0,6) so we had y = -1x+b but now we have y = -1x+6 -1x+6 = y sooo we had ______ < y < _____ now we have -1x+6 < y < ______ make sense? can you do the other line?
here is a hint: |dw:1383113043828:dw|
Thankyou so much! youre a life saver
