What should Mat and Karen done to get the correct answer? Matt 6 – 4(3 – 5)2 + 30 ÷ 5 6 – 4(–2)2 + 30 ÷ 5 6 – 4(4) + 30 ÷ 5 6 – 16 + 30 ÷ 5 −10 + 30 ÷ 5 20 ÷ 5 4 Karen 6 – 4(3 – 5)2 + 30 ÷ 5 6 – 4(–2)2 + 30 ÷ 5 6 – 4(−4) + 30 ÷ 5 6 + 16 + 30 ÷ 5 6 + 16 + 6 22 + 6 28

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait so are they both wrong? Karen seems to be right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, they're both wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on let me solve it real quick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is the 2 by (3-5) an exponent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm I solved it and I got 28 just like Karen did except I soled it a different way.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solved**

OpenStudy (anonymous):

she got the right answer r u sure she is supposed to be wrong??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thing that's confusing me is the 2 an exponent? Like this \[4(3-5)^{2}\]or is it\[4(3-5)2\]Kind of weird of how they put the 2 at the end.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is but i think its just a 2 and ur supposed to multiply the 2 but the number u get after u get done with the parenthesis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so Karen's answer is right i guess but they both solved it the wrong way. How do I explain how they both should have solved it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm well i just resolved it a different way and got four........ im not really sure bc im good at solving things just not explaining the differences... what type of math is this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer to the equation is -4. Neither one of them are correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmmm well then idk haha sorry :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ugh.... I'm in Calculus III and this 'simple' problem is making me mad.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow haha im in algebra 2 honors i should know this too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's irritating! It should be so simple for me to identify their problem and just explain what they need to do to solve it correctly!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is really irritating... i hate thatthey have to make math problems so confusing.. this is why i like science!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay let me think I know you have to use PEMDAS for this...........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea that's what i used.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats what I used too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay well its 11:13 here and i got to get up early for school so im gonna go. Sorry i couldn't be of much help yontoo618......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same here but I'm staying I'm gonna figure this out otherwise its gonna bother the heck out of me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its no big deal :) I'll figure it out some way or another!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Lexieloo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WAIT you said answer was -4 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha ok well bye then :) Talk to you some other time @yontoo618 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow that's WAY TOO much math for me... Im more of a Science/English type of girl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha, yes the answer is -4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nvm thought you would get -4 but forgot to times a negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you distribute the - from the -4. Then you would get 4*(2)*-2=-16. Then do 30/5=6. Add the 2 6's to get 12. Then -16+12=-4.
