What was the main reason the Southern states felt that they needed to secede? In your opinion, why do you think the compromises that Congress made failed to keep the Union together? Do the failed compromises of the pre-Civil War era remind you of any current issues that Congress seems unable to resolve? If so, explain.
The main reason was generally pride, as a major pure population of the south, whites believed they ruled the land and the Africans brought to them by the Europeans were just help and they were basically worthless. in my opinion I think the compromises that congress made failed to keep the union together because of un agreed thoughts amongst what was comprised. as for the last one not really, although when I think of it, states nowadays cant really agree on anything either due to population demographics, this really only applies to politics though because of what is promised by the each parties runners.
eh that last party sounds weird change it to "they were thought of as foreigners"

ya chris is right the main reason was pride and what it reminds me of today is how the government was closed because the democrats and republic wouldn't agree to obama care

The southern states succeeded because Lincoln was elected president. Lincoln was a republican who was against slavery being expanded to the new states and colonies (although he wasn't an abolitionist when elected). The southern states feared that he would confine slavery to the southern states where it would eventually wither and die. Another important point is that Lincoln didn't win the presidency through an all out majority. He was elected due to a split in the wings, which fractured the vote among four parties, allowing him to win with a Plurality and not a majority. This made his election as president seem less legitimate and was a major factor in the southern states succession. Although the election of Lincoln was the trigger to the successions of the states tensions had been building for a long time beforehand.
