OpenStudy (goformit100):

I have a personal question. (kindly please answer it, I want the answer.) . . " WHY can't I become a Moderator on Open Study ? "

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Anyone can become a moderator with enough work and ambitions. Preetha chooses to believe in people - she sees their improvement and progress, even if you were previously a delinquent, she sees the best in people.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

you can't just ask for moderator-ship; you have to earn it thru hard work, it may take years and what not…. but just remain vigilante and patient, you may or may not be chosen :) best wishes goform.

mathslover (mathslover):

Goformit, I used to have that feeling too , but then I compared myself with all the moderators. Then, I came to know about my faults and what is rest in myself for being a mod... Rather than asking for being a moderator, you must carry on your good work in helping the users out there in the groups provided. I suppose, you like maths, so you keep helping students there but yes, nicely , the other moderators will surely notice that and if they think that you are able to become a mod then they will forward their suggestion to Preetha. You need to have patience and keep doing good work. Remember, hardwark always pays off. "Success demands three things; 1. Hard work 2. Sacrifice 3. Struggle" "There are no secrets to success: don't waste time looking for them, success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty to those for whom you work and persistence. "

OpenStudy (goformit100):

" Why success demands these many things ? I personally have experienced that GETTING SUCCESS is very very easy. "

OpenStudy (goformit100):

@Jamierox4ev3r give me a perfect reason, why can't I just ask for moderator-ship ?

OpenStudy (shamil98):

why do you want to become a mod?

OpenStudy (bibby):

You can ask for it. You just won't get it

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

lol

OpenStudy (shamil98):

What are your reasons? What are your goals if you do become a mod? Anyone can become a mod, but I don't think asking for will help much..but it could be under review. Just keep up the good work of helping others . I don't know much about becoming a mod, so try asking a new mod about how they became one , if you truly seek it.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

I want to get the experience of becoming a MOD. because :- I believe that "SUCCESS comes from experience and experience come from BAD EXPERIENCES." I BELIEVE becoming a mod will be a good one.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Maybe this verse from Bhagawad Gita might enlighten you: "Karmanye Vadhikaraste, Ma phaleshou kada chana, Ma Karma Phala Hetur Bhurmatey Sangostva Akarmani"

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

A: Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol nice one @poopsiedoodle xD but just reading how this thread has been going, I don't know, I personally find that I must work hard to achieve success. If you think that success is achieved by taking the easy route, I believe you are sorely misinformed. Goform, you can't just ask for this position. Well, theoretically you could, but its like me asking to become a senator or something. the mod. position isn't just a walk-in job, flyby night job. and wait here's something that didn't make sense to me: If bad experience forms experience and wisdom in general, and then that builds success, then if being a mod. is a good experience, how will that help you? If anything, I would advise you to rethink your words sir. I don't think by you making a post like this shows a very good example to other OS users, as they too will begin to ask for moderator status, but really it is not that easy. It's not about the purple outline and ban powers. Even for me, the A is not just a symbol. I take my job seriously, but not to the point of spamming old posts. Goform, don't degrade yourself by asking why you can't become a moderator on OS. Instead, ask, "what can I do better/what can I fix about myself that would make me a better fit for this position?" also, think for a bit. This job holds quite a bit of responsibility. ponder on whether or not you are ready to accept it. I know for myself that I would love to be a mod. someday, but I would like to wait until I become more mature. For now, I just do what I do best; welcome people, help them if I can, and patiently await my day of reckoning, to put it dramatically lol Thanks to those who actually read my paragraphs. lol

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Well said @Jamierox4ev3r!

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

All hail Jamie XD

OpenStudy (dobby1):

I completely agree I may not be an ambassador o a mod I may not even have a SS over 65. but I do know that I really would like to be a mod someday. and I know the only way I am going to do that is to keep doing what I do help others follow the code of conduct and hopefully someday when I am 18 or older Preetha will notice everything I have done in mathmatics and notice that I tried my best in other sections and ask me to be a mod that is the only way that I know of to become a mod and that is the only way I would have it.

OpenStudy (dobby1):

I agree with @jamierox4ev3r

OpenStudy (preetha):

OMG, such wisdom. I am truly humbled by these answers. I wish OpenStudy was just full of people like you all (Dobby, Jamie, Aravind, shamil, comp, mathlover...) I have nothing more to add.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

aw :D I'm so flattered xD its because I'm around so many wise people like you, preetha, my parents, other mods. etc etc. xD but I feel as if I still have a looooong way to go, I'm just a teenager

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Started this in the morning... then had to go work... so finally finishing and posting! "give me a perfect reason, why can't I just ask for moderator-ship ? " Those who seek power most directly have been strongly linked with those that abuse it. In contrast, those who network, lead by example, and express balance and moderation are generally better choices for positions of power. In the grand scheme of things, I became a moderator with a relatively short time on OS. Hero has been a user far, far longer than I and was finally given moderator status. Each of our situations was different. I do not know Hero's so I can't talk about it past the fact that I was asked if I felt he would be a good mod and why. I recommended him and gave my reasons why in reply, which is a part of the moderator review process. In my case, I started reporting some things not long after starting using OS. I also have been involved in a number of suggestions in Feedback. In all cases I have been looking for solutions, willing to consider alternate viewpoints (even if I did not adopt them all), and I have regularly posted in messages that people need to take a step back at times when things were heated. In short, I was doing a users level of moderator duties in pointing out the CoC, participating in site development ideas, and overall promoting balance. This got noticed and Preetha asked me why I was not a mod. I replied favorably to her, sent her an email detailing a lot of information about myself to hep her in deciding if she would want me as a mod, expressed my opinions on administration type tasks, etc. Then I did not hear anything back for months. No big deal. I just kept on doing what I was doing, other moderators were made, and life went on. It was not until Preetha asked me about it again that things started moving, I was formally interviewed, the other mods were polled on their opinions about me, and so on. This was in no way a short process. I am quite certain that if I had started bugging Preetha after that first time, the process could have been a lot longer or never have happened. Why? Because when you push hard there is always one question: what do you want this power for? Also, being a moderator is not at all fun. You have to be judge, jury, and executioner. Appeals are only available through emailing abuse at openstudy.com, so you basically get to be in charge for the moment. That means hard choices about what actions to take. You also can't afford to play favorites; You can't fail to advise/warn/kick/suspend someone just because they have a high smart score, are your friend, and so on. You have to balance what you feel would be the best lesson for a person and apply that. Several people will end up hating you for this and we regularly see moderators become targets of very hateful tactics. OpenStudy has to be exceptionally careful about who they choose because moderators have that power and responsibility and problems to handle all at the same time with poise and composure. Finally, the moderators are a loosely knit team. We are all notified about the actions of every other moderator. When you get a warning, it is a warning from the team. Every other moderator can and usually does take that into account when they see later violations. This means if one mod warned person X, and person X decides just to break the rules when that mod is off, it will not work. The other mods will see the warning history, know this is an ongoing issue, and take stronger actions. That means every moderator they pick must be someone that they can integrate into that team, must be willing to support the shared goals of moderation, and suppress any extremes of individual opinion on how moderation must be handled. If you go and look at how moderators handle things, there are differences, but there are a lot of similarities. Most of it you don't see and we don't talk about. Can you fit into that team? Can you keep your personal opinions out of it and do your best to apply an even rule to the situations you come across? Can you keep yourself from playing favorites?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

woah… this is good info xD *takes notes* e.mc you're a pretty great mod/executioner if you ask me LOL

mathslover (mathslover):

I agree with Jamie, @e.mccormick - You're really awesome mod... btw, it really looked as an epic as I scrolled down.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

Whatever you'll say, I believe in :- " Where there is a will, one becomes UNSTOPPABLE and leaves no stone unturned. "

mathslover (mathslover):

Exactly goformit, keep on doing good work, excel yourself in each aspect, then no one will be able to stop you from becoming mod, but for now, have patience my friend.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol i just realized… goformit unfanned me :3

mathslover (mathslover):

I balanced that Jamie :P

OpenStudy (goformit100):

@mathslover Why people will stop me from becoming MOD ?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

smh oh well, but goformit just keep heading towards the right direction. With the right motivations, you will be able to achieve your goals, dreams, and aspirations. Just remember, you must have the right ambitions and be willing to sacrifice/work hard in order to achieve success.. success, real hard-earned success, should never be easy obtain. and goformit, people are not stopping you. We are just giving you suggestions so that you may become even better (think of it as constructive criticism) and become a mod. eventually. You have to realize that we are only supporting you. and in my professional opinion, you should probably close this question as your overarching question has been answered already. Cheers!

mathslover (mathslover):

I myself used to ask the same question that goformit asked here to Madam @Preetha , but now, I realize that I was wrong at that time. That behaviour of me totally showed my immaturity and impatience. Now, I regret for that, and just enjoying working on OpenStudy! @goformit100 I said " No one will be able to stop you from becoming mod" - from people/no one I meant the admins. That is : They will surely promote you to a moderator but for that you need to have patience and trust on the admins of OS

mathslover (mathslover):

Again, nicely said Jamie.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

I dont know, why cant you?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Other people will not stop you. The thing is this: Leaving no stone unturned means doing anything and everything you can. That is very bad advice. Many things should never be done. If you turn over the wrong stones and do ANYTHING then the person that will stop you is you.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

aaaaaannnnnnnddddd here we go again >.< we just explained, you have to prove your self to the mods. and this can be a very very very long process. you gotta be patient. in time, if the people in charge think you are fit for the job, they will select you. You have to be willing to endure the trials that e.mc went into detail about.. I honestly don't think you took the time to read what me and e.mc had said. Oh look you deleted your reply -.- but still, like @e.mccormick said, the only thing stopping you.. is you! We're here to help and support you, but first you have to accept our aid. Oh and btw I am not going on tc with you goformit -.-

OpenStudy (goformit100):

I have a perfect Experience of 'Good and Bad'.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

I mean I can easily identify what is good and too what is bad.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

well if you think about it, everyone's opinion on what is good and what is bad depends on their personal values and beliefs and their cultural surroundings/human geography.. don't make me go all teenage philosophical on you goform

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@Jamierox4ev3r Which is one of the points I was making. Personal mores should be and are evaluated by the OS team. That way they can find compatible people. There have been a few gung ho ones that had to learn to be a bit more moderate in moderation. There is also talk of at least one that lost mod status. When you google up a bunch of the mod and staff names, you find a lot. I did some research like that when it was looking like I would become a mod.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

mhm… personal issues/bias can interfere with whether or not you are a good candidate for mod. or not, and well by unmanning someone just b/c they gave some advice, that right there is not very good basis for this position

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, personal mores are not issues/bias per se. Mores are societal values. They are generally pretty similar in a society, but what is a society? The personal mores are which set of societal values a person clings to with what viewpoint on them and their application. So a person that says they are a member of a particular group in a certain country and city will have some subset of the mores of that location and group: personal mores.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

well true true. Sometimes it can change how a person acts tho

OpenStudy (goformit100):

All you are saying is kindly acceptable. But answer " WHY can't I become a Moderator on Open Study ?"

OpenStudy (goformit100):

And There comes a MOD Power.... He/ She closes the Question.... Was I breaking Rule or CoC.... No.... it was a MOD's view, that he/she feels that Becoming Mod is not good... So closed the Question. How dash on their Part..... :'( it makes mr cry.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

A mod could have closed this for may reasons. For one, it is not a feedback topic. For another, they might have felt it was starting arguments. You question has been answered. It has bee answered many times, so they may have also felt it was time to close it. Oh, and it may not have been a mod. Admins can also close questions. So go back and read. Not one person has said you can't be a mod. All of them have said you need to come at it more realistically and carefully and with learning and so on. You just keep refusing these answers and asking the same question, which is spamming... another reason someone might have closed the question.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

@e.mccormick Okay.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

@e.mccormick THANKS @Jamierox4ev3r THANKS @Ashleyisakitty THANKS

OpenStudy (goformit100):

Thankyou every one... :)
