Solve -3x + 1 > 4 and describe the graph of the solution. x < -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the left x < -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the right x > -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the left x > -1; Open circle on -1, shading to the right

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

first solve for x as you would if it had been an = instead of >

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so -3x + 1 = 4 minus 1 from bot sides - 1 -1 -3x = 3 divide both sides by -3 /-3 /-3 x = -1 it would have been the same process for -3x + 1 > 4 -1 -1 -3x > 3 but know that when you divide by a negative for /-3 /-3 inequalities, the sign flips x < -1 which means that x is less than -1 less than would mean to the left, or going in the negative direction and because there was no "or equal to" part, it is an open hole at -1 If you don't understand any part of this, feel free to ask :)

So its shaded to the left?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yep :)
