Geometry Help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you call angles ABE and DCE?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

congurent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it? i was absence on that day and m not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you should relearn the chapter on Parallel Lines. You cant prove theorems about them, if you're not familiar with the properties of them. In any event, those two angles are called Alternate Interior Angles. And whenever you have alternate interior angles, they are equal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay can you please give me answers ? if it's okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you here to learn or to get answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

learn but i gotta turn this in asap i gotta look more khan academy videos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As I said before, I strongly recommend you learn the chapter on Parallel Lines. Then you will have an understanding so that you can solve problems and prove various theorems regarding parallel lines. Just to give you an answer will defeat the purpose.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will learn those stuff on weekend but i really gotta summit tomaroo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I can't help. Tell your teacher that you need to learn the chapter first, then you can solve the problems. Perhaps ask your teacher for a few day extension to turn in your assignment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he is really mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you tell him that you want to learn but need another couple of days, he won't work with you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope he says i have to turn it in tomaroo or i will have zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that proof the only question you have left to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that's the last one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you manage to answer all the other ones?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i look quick examples but i don't understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can solve algebra stuff but reasoning stuff not my thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean i am good at algebra stuffs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will show you.........try to follow for a couple of moments.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In my diagram, lines AB and CD are parallel. Line EF, that intersects both parallel lines is called a transversal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Becuase I drew this tranversal, there are 8 angles that are formed. I labelled them 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Angles 2,3,5,6 are called interior angles because these 4 angles are in the inside of the parallel lines. Angles 1,4,7,8 are called exterior angles. They are on the outside of the parallel lines.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Angles 2 and 6, are both interior angles. But they have a special name. They are Alternate Interior angles. Meaning, one angle is on one side of the transversdal, and the other angle is on the other side of the transversal. You must know that a pair of alternate interior angles are equal. There is one more pair of alternate interior angles; that is, angles 3 and 5. Do you understand this so far? Any questions till this point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i do understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. Now, you now have enough knowledge to answer the proof you want answered. But we will do it together. BUT, keep in mind, there is more material on parallel lines that you need to know. I am showing you what you need to know to answer the proof.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so first in is given right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1383272002974:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have the proof in front of you, so we can do it together. We want to prove that the two triangles, AEB and DEC are congruent.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And you know, that we can prove two triangles congruent, many ways. Example...SSS, SAS, AAS, ASA. So let's go through the proof. Step 1............AB is paralle to CD...Reason is Given..which you filled in correctly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Step 2........... Statement says, that angle ABE is congruent to angle DCE... what do we call those two angles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AB is parallel to CD. BC acts as the transversal. So what do you call angles ABE and DCE?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is where i had trouble with i can figure out which is vertical, corresponding and those stuff in this case it's two different triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as i would guess i would say Angles interior

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at the parallel lines AB and CD. I know it is sideways, but they are parallel. The line segment BC is a tranversal. So angles ABE and DCE are alternate interior angles, because these 2 angles are on the inside , one on one side of the transversal, and the other angle on the other side of the tranversal. Agree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it's Angles Interior ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i getting it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the Reason #2..why they are equal is because Alternate Interior Angles are equal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay #3 is it caz it's parrael or given

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#3... AB = DC ...Given (Look at the given on top of the page, it is given that AB = DC)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#5 is given too right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ow no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For #4, the statement is, angle BAE = angle CDE...what do you call those 2 angles? Look at the two angles and tell me what you call them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#5...is NOT given..that is what you want to prove. Only #1 and #3 are given.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For #4...why are angles BAE and CDE equal? You give me a reason.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alternate exterior angles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it same as 8 and 4 from the example that u give me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, they are alternate interior angles also...look carefully, they both lie INSIDE the parallel lines, so we call them a pair of alternate interior angles. And, again, the reason why they are equal is becuase "Alternate Interior Angles are equal."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ow okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So mark off your diagram....angle ABE = DCE; side AB = side DC, angle BAE = angle CDE. Now, the last step. Why are the two triangles are congruent? What is the reason? Would they be congruent becuase of SSS, SAS, ASA, or AAS? Look carefully.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Need my help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Watch...I will show you the diagram..marked off.
