ORIGINAL. DO NOT READ. --------------------- --------------------- I have an essay due next Monday on modern day self-improvement vs. Franklin's idea of self-improvement. Which means it's due in less than a day. To be more specific: Would Franklin agree with the ethics of The Biggest Loser (that's the part of modern self-improvement I'm working with)? ******************************************************************************* I'd like some tips on this topic, NO proofreading until I'm done (by tomorrow - yes I know it's AM but still - I will have an attached document for proofreading). ******************************************************************************* If you want more info on Franklin's values go read his "Arriving at Perfection" (in my 50 Great Essays, Penguin Academy 4th Edition book, it's page 133). But if you want notes I took in class you'll have to tag me and request them specifically.
So what do you need? Someone to proofread it for you?
@e.mccormick No, rather some tips if possible... I haven't written it yet '~'
You are going to need to take a position, Franklin would/would not agree, and then give support as for why. This is called an academic argument or position paper: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/724/01/ Basically you have a thesis paragraph that states your position and what you intend to prove. It introduces the topic and leads in to the body. Usually you end up modifying this as you go and sometimes you even write it last. The reason why is even though it comes first, it pints are what comes after, so knowing what comes after helps. Then you will support your position with reasons. This will be the majority of the paper. Three supporting reasons is common. A counter argument is also not uncommon. A counter argument is where you show what other people would say or assume. You might be able to defeat the argument, but if it is too easy you have a straw man which is not a good argument. In this case, lets say you pick would agree. Then you might say something like, "It is clear that there are some points would Franklin disagree with. Specifically this and that are opposites of his view. However, these are minor point according to bla bla, which is why I feel he would agree rather than disagree with the oveall..." See, the counter argument admits flaws. Showing you are realistic about the flaws in your position makes it stronger. Then you wrap it all up in a conclusion that summarizes your argument and presents the the position again, but as shown and supported for those reasons.
Thank you, but I meant tips on what to use from sources (Franklin and articles on TBL). However you still aided me in my work so I am giving you a medal (:
Ah, that would take some research, which I don't have the time to do. Have my own homework to get done.
@kittiwitti1 you should of ask for help earlier instead of asking the day before its due
*You should've asked*/*it's due* I don't necessarily require help but it's nice to have some. And that was obvious the moment I asked.
Well, thanks anyway @e.mccormick (:
Sorry my grammar was not perfect you know when you think of what your going to say and you type ahead what your going to say or to fast @kittiwitti1
Haha it's no problem I'm just a grammar nazi sometimes ;P @JazzyMLee9 btw How's your LOTF thing going? (;
Okay so far. I fan you @kittiwitti1
Aww thanks I feel flattered xD So would you like a summary? I'm afraid I have to sleep now but as soon as I have time I'll give you an analysis or whatever you want (:
*Analysis not summary
Ah fudge sorry I have to go sleep now, unfortunately. I'll see you tomorrow! (:
Nooo don't do that if I need to ask you something I don't understand than it will be okay but don't tell me what happens after this chapter and such. BYE
Okay~ lolol
Does anyone know what year that Benjamin Franklin wrote "Arriving at Perfection"?
Look at "How the Autobiography Was Written" on: http://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/a/the-autobiography-of-benjamin-franklin/about-the-autobiography-of-benjamin-franklin So it is going to depend on what part of the autobography it is.
