Simplify:...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

Simplify: 7 sqrt3 - 4 sqrt6 + sqrt 48 - sqrt54 11 square root of 6 end root minus 7 square root of 12 11 square root of 3 end root minus 7 square root of 6 negative 3 square root of 9 4 square root of 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me see how you simplify sqrt(48) and simplify sqrt(54). Can you simplify those 2 for me?

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

14.276?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. You have to break down radicals, not use a calculator.

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

oh yea srry :D

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

48 = 24 = 12 =6 = 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(48) = sqrt (16) times sqrt(3) (16 x 3 = 48) = 4 sqrt(3) Since sqrt (16) = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now you try ...break down sqrt(54).

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

how did you get 16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 is a perfect square. When breaking down a radical..you are looking for 2 numbers that when you multiply them you get 48, but one of the numbers should be the highest possible perfect square. so 16 x 3 = 48...where 16 is the highest perfect square. Now, you try to simplify sqrt(54).

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

18 x 3 = 54?

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

no wait 18 isn't a perfect square...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But 18 and 3 are not perfect squares! We need that one of the numbers should be the highest possible perfect square! Try again. Break down sqrt(54).

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

9 x 6 = 54???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! so we say, sqrt (54) = sqrt(9) times sqrt(6) = 3 sqrt(6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we can do your problem............

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

i am not following you...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7 sqrt(3) - 4 sqrt(6) + sqrt(48) - sqrt(54) = 7 sqrt(3) - 4 sqrt(6) + 4 sqrt(3) - 3 sqrt(6) = 11 sqrt(3) - 7 sqrt(6) because we combine like terms... 7 sqrt(3) + 4 sqrt(3) = 11 sqrt(3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and -4 sqrt(6) - 3 sqrt(6) = - 7 sqrt(6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We break doiwn radicals...and combine like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We did not break down sqrt(3) or sqrt(6) becuase they cannot be broken down further.

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

ohh ok i think i understand...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try some others for practice, as radicals is very very important!
