can a function that is a polynomial have a square root in it?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

what does polynomial mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not if the x is inside of the square root :o

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

got an example of the aforementioned?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah p(x)=x^4-1/2x^3+5x^2-4.144x+1 f(x)=sqrt2x-5 g(x)=-(x-4)^3(x+5)^4(3-9x)^8 h(x) = x^3-2x^2+3x-x^-1+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought the second f(x) was not a polynomial because I didn't think they had sqrts. Our book doesn't give a definite definition only goes into problems. . .

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\bf f(x)=\sqrt{2x-5}\implies y =\sqrt{2x-5}\implies \cfrac{y^2+5}{2}=x\) is a horizontal parabola, and will not pass the "vertical line test" and thus is not a \(\bf function\) as defined http://fooplot.com/#W3sidHlwZSI6MCwiZXEiOiJzcXJ0KDJ4LTUpIiwiY29sb3IiOiIjMDAwMDAwIn0seyJ0eXBlIjowLCJlcSI6Ii1zcXJ0KDJ4LTUpIiwiY29sb3IiOiIjMDAwMDAwIn0seyJ0eXBlIjoxMDAwfV0-

how can I figure that out without a calculator and just pencil and paper?
