is internet addiction a mental disorder?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain further?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well just because your on the internet all the time doesn't make it a disorder. A disorder would be like blindness or not being able to move.

This should be in the science section but yes it is heres more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_addiction_disorder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you serious @mysticghost? It's a disorder?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An addiction is a disorder. Addictions are unhealthy @Loveless13 to a person. People can be addicted to video games, medicines, the internet, chocolate, drugs, etc. As much as chocolate is wonderful and video games are fun being addicted can lead to negative results. Addictions can even make a person aggressive and violent if what they are addicted to gets taken away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bottom line is internet addiction is a disorder and i am sure it can be treated just like other addictions (:

Internet addiction disorder (IAD), or, now more commonly called Problematic Internet Use (PIU).[1] Other terms include Internet overuse, problematic computer use or pathological computer use, is excessive computer use that interferes with daily life.[2] These terms avoid the term addiction and are not limited to any single cause. IAD was originally proposed as a disorder in a satirical hoax by Ivan Goldberg, M.D., in 1995.[3] He took pathological gambling as diagnosed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as his model for the description[4] of IAD. The broad category IAD ist not listed in the DSM-5 from 2013 as a disorder, although the more specific "internet gaming disorder" receives mention as a condition for further study. IAD receives coverage in the press, and possible future classification as a psychological disorder continues to be debated and researched in the psychiatric community.
