hey guys got some scarlett letter questions. who's game? Chapter 1: 1. What is the mood at the start of the story, and how does Hawthorne set it? What specific details contribute to the mood? 2. What overt symbol does Hawthorne employ in contrast to the rest of the scenery?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and Chapter 2: 3. How does the narrator characterize the women in the crowd at the market place? 4. How is Hester different from those around her? What specific details set her apart? 5. How might the scaffold upon which Hester stands be symbolic? 6. Hawthorne introduced the four main characters in the first chapter. How would you describe each so far?

I haven't read the Scarlet Letter either. Sorry :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is chapter 1 just "The Prison Door?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes chapter one is the prison door

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"A throng of bearded men, in sad-coloured garments and grey steeple-crowned hats" What do the colors say about the mood of the people? "The founders of a new colony, whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness they might originally project, have invariably recognised it among their earliest practical necessities to allot a portion of the virgin soil as a cemetery, and another portion as the site of a prison." What juxtaposed imagery and ideas does he use? What does that say about the people he's talking about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what questions are you answering? if your are answering nay of them can you please number them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was more adding to the questions than answering I think :P But these were for #1) #2) is what he mentions in the first sentence of the last paragraph that is quite blatant ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@AllTehMaffs I am not understanding what you are putting for #1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For #1) I was trying to get you to notice that the colors are muted and sad (literally "sad-colored") And that he Juxtaposes the happines and hope of founding a new Utopia with the grim tasks of setting up a cemetery and a prison on its "virgin soil." Then it just gets more bleak. #2) yeah, the rose bush. It's all bright and colorful compared with the dullness of everything else he decribes; and he says they're blossomed from the feet of saints. lovely!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I gotta run though. See you lata'

@AllTehMaffs Dude thanks so much
