\[\frac{ 5^{8} }{ 5^{4} } = \frac{ 5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 }{ 5*5*5*5 }\] then you can cross out four 5s from the top and bottom \[\frac{ 5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 }{ 5*5*5*5 } = 5*5*5*5 = 5^{4}\]
