OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

Write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line y = 2x + 2 and passes through the point (6, 3).

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so what do you know about perpendicular lines to start off with?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

nothing really

OpenStudy (tester97):

oh well i guess im goin to have to teach it to you :) do you know anything about parallel lines?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

arent they slanted

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so you know the 2 "ll" in the word parallel?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

the lines cant be intersecting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they will never ever interesect.

OpenStudy (tester97):

yes! they will never ever intersect :) see you know something.

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok now what about perpendicular lines? what do you think happens with those?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

they will intersect

OpenStudy (tester97):

intersect how? like at any kinda angle or what?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

i dont know

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so u the letter T? thats a perpendicular letter if u will

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

so its straight across

OpenStudy (tester97):

yup what kind of angle does that make?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

180

OpenStudy (tester97):

hmm lets try that again. like on one side of the T in the corner?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

90

OpenStudy (austinl):

|dw:1383833576094:dw|

OpenStudy (tester97):

yes 90 degrees so whenever you see perpendicular lines on a graph what will they do?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

cross

OpenStudy (tester97):

not just cross but cross at a 90 degrees angle

OpenStudy (tester97):

i want you to keep this picture ok? its 2 examples of parallel and perpendicular line ex1 is parallel and ex 2 is perpendicular

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

ok

OpenStudy (tester97):

now when you are trying to write a equation what is the formula for slope inter-intercept form?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

im not sure

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok umm you know how in algebra there was always the same equation we had to use? the one where it has y and x?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

i think

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok what is it?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

umm x is the number of somthing and y is the number that is totaled right?

OpenStudy (tester97):

yup :)

OpenStudy (tester97):

now try to put that into a equation

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

so y=2x+2 and if the cordinates are 6,3 so 2x+6=8x and the 2 would be an y so 2y+3=5y

OpenStudy (tester97):

whoa whoa whoa i was just asking for the slope intercept we will get to the rest of that later

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

oh

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

slope is 6,2 right because that would be the cordinates

OpenStudy (tester97):

no i was just asking for the basic equation. what i was looking for is y=mx+b. you know what that is right?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

i dont know :I

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so im sure you know what that is its in your question y=mx+b ====> y = 2x + 2 do you see it now?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

y = 2x + 2

OpenStudy (tester97):

yes that is correct!!!!!!!! DING DING DING

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so now are you understanding this so far?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

yes

OpenStudy (tester97):

phew ok. so now we will get to the question ready?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

ok

OpenStudy (tester97):

OK so heres the question Write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line y = 2x + 2 and passes through the point (6, 3). thats it right?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

yup

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so you are trying to find a line that is perpendicullar to y=2x+2 right?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

yea

OpenStudy (tester97):

ok so when we are looking for the perpendicular of a line guess what?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

what

OpenStudy (tester97):

all you have to do is get the reciprocal for the slope :)

OpenStudy (tester97):

you do know what that is right?

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

i have to go bell just rung

OpenStudy (tester97):

well when your back message me and i will help

OpenStudy (maxdrizner):

k thanks

OpenStudy (tester97):

np :)
