how you would use the elimination method to solve 5x – 9y = –16 2x + 6y = –16?

OpenStudy (radar):

Multiply each equation by something that will give a variable equal but opposite sign coefficient. In this case I would first eliminate x. This is accomplished by multiplying the first equation thru by 2. The 2nd equation by -5 so that the coefficient of x will combine when added to 0, thus eliminating the x. Solve for y as you now have one equation with one unknown. When you have solved for y, then substitute the value of y into the original equations and solve for x.

thank you C:

You're welcome. Now that you know that y = -1, you can now solve for x.

would x be -5?
