Find the exact value of the expression. sec^-1(1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where is the sec of an angle equal to 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am honestly confused about this problem. others like it are not as confusing as much as this one for me. I would appreciate it if you would explain how to do this one problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you are finding sec^(-1) (1), what you are looking for, is the angle whose secant of that angle will equal to 1.

Oh wow now I now why this was so confusing for me. I was thinking that sec was the reciprocal for sin that't why I couldn't come up with a value. Stupid me lol. so the answer should be pi since cos at pi=1 and the reciprocal of 1 is 1 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, cos(pi) = -1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at the graph of y = cos x. It should be clear that cos 0 = 1. And cos(pi) = -1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow another stupid mistake on my part! 0 is definitely the answer. Thanks for the help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, it is. Welcome.
