OpenStudy (yacoub1993):

Solve the linear equation.

The left side of the equation, when you add the two fractions, with a LCD of 9, is (4x - 9)/9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Agree with that?

OpenStudy (yacoub1993):

i think u mad a mistake in solving because it is -3 in the denominator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry...I thought there is a 3 in the denominator...will rewrite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry for that...you agree? @Yacoub1993

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Left side is (27-2x)/9

OpenStudy (yacoub1993):

yes i agree

OpenStudy (yacoub1993):

continue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Yacoub1993 How would you solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Yacoub1993 suggestion?

OpenStudy (yacoub1993):

no but i think 3 - 2x = x + 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You cancelled the 9 with 27 on the left side. But that is NOT permitted, as you have a + or - sign, you cannot cancel.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree that 9 and 27 cancel, but that operation of cancelling is not permitted in this case.

OpenStudy (yacoub1993):

ohh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look what I did...can I cancel the 2 and 8..and get 10 for an answer? Obviously I cannot, as the answer is 14/2 = 7. Not 10.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if you have two terms (binomial) separated by a + or - sign, you cannot cancel one of the terms.
