"How many a poor immortal soul have I met well-nigh crushed and smothered under its load, creeping down the road of life, pushing before it a barn seventy-five feet by forty, its Augean stables (2) never cleansed, and one hundred acres of land, tillage, mowing, pasture, and woodlot!"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

explain how it is a metaphor and hyperbole?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's an excerpt from a Henry David Thoreau writing where he's talking about how he built a cabin and lived in in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First off, it is a metaphor because it is a comparison that does not use the words "like" or "as." It compares a poor immortal soul to "well nigh crushed and smothered under it's load." It is a hyperbole because it contains serious exaggerations that are obviously not true, including the metaphor itself. Because obviously the poor immortal soul is not "never cleansed, and one hundred acres of land, tillage, mowing, pasture, and woodlot." Does this answer your question?
