In the 1870s or thereabouts, a German with the name of "Johann Philipp Gustav von Jolly" thought up a new way to find the gravitational constant G. His idea was as follows. Place a 3.0 kg spherical flask of mercury on a scale and balance it. Then bring a big lead ball with a mass of 5775 kg directly underneath the mercury flask, such that the center-to-center distance d was 56.9 cm. See how much mass he would have to add to the other side of the scale to rebalance it. We know that G = 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2/kg2. How much mass would von Jolly have had to add?
