what are antigens made of?

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

anything that binds to a receptor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An antigen can be anything! An antigen can be thought of as anything that can cause your immune system to spring into action and fight it. That could be a cold or a flu virus. It could also be peanuts! People who are allergic to peanuts experience an immune system response when peanuts (antigens) are introduced to their body and their immune system thinks they're bad and so the immune system attacks. People have allergies to a wide variety of things, so almost anything can be an antigen.

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

what @ambika.rustagi said is absolutely right...antigen is any material foreign to ur body. it has an epitope which can be gylcoprotein or glycolipids or just proteins lipids etc etc....i would like to add that every immunologic response is not due to an allergy....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

teh differences lies in the presence of different protienaaceous substrances on the surface of RBC. these substances are known as antigens
