Find the value of x and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby could you help please?

OpenStudy (bibby):

playin video games give me like 10 minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby haha okay

OpenStudy (bibby):

what do you know about trapezoids?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby almost nothing lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1384245281505:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

112-90=22 90-22=68 sin (68)=h/(2x+3y) h=sin(68)*(2x+3y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mononoor I dont understand the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos (3x+11y-90)=h/12 h=12cos(3x+11y-90) 12cos(3x+11y-90)=sin(68)*(2x+3y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but this way is hard.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you give me an easy way then lol

OpenStudy (bibby):

couldn't you assume it's isoceles and do 2 equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby i was thinking x and y have to be something for 2x+3y to equal 12 and then for 30x+11y to equal 112?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh in pic, 2 side is equal?

OpenStudy (bibby):

to be honest, I'm not sure at all but I assumed so

OpenStudy (bibby):

oh god yeah. it says in the notation that the 2 sides are equal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby so how do i solve this?

OpenStudy (bibby):

since the sides are equal you know that 2x+3y = 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. 2x+3y=12 and 30x+11y=112

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah and i got x = 6 + 1.5y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=6-1.5y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry thats what i meant!

OpenStudy (bibby):

and now you can replace the variable to get it all in terms of y or x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 2 (6-1.5y) + 3y = 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby

OpenStudy (bibby):

Huh, how rude. He left? OK x=6-1.5y thus the other angle = 30(6-1.5y)+11y you distribute the 30 and get 180-45y+11y = 180-34y

OpenStudy (bibby):

112 = 180-34y 34y = 180-112 (add 34y to both sides and subtract 112 from both) 34y = 68 y = 2 SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby and x = 6??

OpenStudy (bibby):

we can go back to the original x = 6 - 1.5y 1.5y = 1.5(2) = 3 x = 6 - 3 = 3 How'd you get 6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby x = 3? lol

OpenStudy (bibby):

Yeah. but what's important is the steps to get to the answer and not the answer itself. How'd you get x=6? Do you get how I got 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby yeah I understand how you got 3, you substituted 2 for y in x = 6-1.5(3) What I did was substitute it for 2x + 3(2)=12

OpenStudy (bibby):

ooh, that's less work than what I did I guess. always run through your work like 3 times. so much of the dumb stuff I did on tests were careless arithmetic errors like those lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby hahah I will next time, thank you though! you're the only one that helps me lol I swear you're my math wiz

OpenStudy (bibby):

hahahaa no way. tag me whenever and I'll help where I can but I'm just as unsure about this stuff half the time. good luck with whatever exams and stuff you have. I'll stop replying now :D
