Solve and graph the absolute value inequality: |2x + 4| > 14

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

this would either be 2x + 4 > 14 or 2x + 4 < -14

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Solve for x in 2x + 4 > 14 and 2x + 4 < -14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright but I have a problem, the answer is in a line graph

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Ok, so first solve for x, I'll help you graph it, and then you will graph a different example, to make it clear, OK? @0037109

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Solve for x, carefully, take your time.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Tell me what you get when yo are done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it be x > 5 and x < -9 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman Done

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yup. So now we are going to graph it.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

|dw:1384352688689:dw| see why is it open dot and not closed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have a couple more questions :\ but thanks for the help man :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it open dot @SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yes, see why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it because it's separated?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Open dot means that the value is not included, like -9 and 5 are not one of the solutions for x. closed dot means that the point on which the dot is, is included as a solution, like if on point 5 on a number line, there would have been a closed dot,, 5 would be aslo a solution for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it, I have a couple more questions can you help me?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Sure!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I put it here?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

If you want to, but to maintain order, it would be better to open a new one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK!

OpenStudy (aggie12341):

x>12
