help with graphing sequences and series

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathnoobie10 @agent0smith @amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

avg rate of change is the slope between 2 points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i know, but the "n=" throws me off. for the first one, is it just x=1, x=3?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[\frac{27(1/3)^{1-1}-27(1/3)^{3-1}}{1-3}\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a sequences is a discrete function, by convention the variable n is used to denote a discrete function as opposed to x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that equals -12 i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that but all of the sequence formulas throw me off, i dont understand them

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i get -12 too, maybe its asking for the average slope from point to point which is just kinda wierd

OpenStudy (amistre64):

slope is -7 from 2 to 3 and -18 from 1 to 2 -25/2 is still about -12

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah, i got no idea what its asking for now :/

OpenStudy (amistre64):

modeling, try the stated points and see what matches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What...? >.<

OpenStudy (amistre64):

27/3 = 9 so the first 2 fail ... we want a n=2, to give us a 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[\frac{1}{3}3^{2-1}=1\] the point 2,1 fits that one to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what confuses me is how the coordinates are even there... how do they get them and how do they correspond with the question? if it's direct, we have 4,1 and 3, 3. which is -2 as a slope
