"How does the author use time and place to strengthen the message or theme of the story?" Can someone please explain this question to me? I don't know how to answer it correctly.
I'm supposed to be answering it based off of the story "Ruth In Exile" but I feel the time ad place doesn't help with the theme..

I have a different way of thinking so I don't always understand how to answer questions without an example...
Theme. The hidden (or not so hidden) message of the story. The lesson. The moral. The purpose the author has in writing. The essence of understanding behind the tale. How do you strengthen the theme of your story? First, you should identify it. What is the backbone of your story? Or, continuing with the heart analogy, what is the blood, that source of life? Identify the theme your story will share. For example, in Frankenstein, the theme is creation, the act of creating outside the divine. It’s recycling to the extreme. But don’t stop with just one theme! Frankenstein is deliciously rich in themes (some of which are stretched pretty far by grad students) such as: revenge, desire, love, faith, truth, fear, loss, family, justice, nature vs. nurture, solitude, sympathy… the list goes on. Goggle “Themes of Frankenstein” and you’ll see what I mean.
The time and place of your story will give your theme a sense of feeling, the setting, emotions, imagination, etc. It gives a reader something to remember about the novel and the theme. "Give your setting a purpose. Let it help illuminate your theme, your plot or your characters (or all three). Use it to help us understand how your characters feel and act, and it will play a much larger role in making your novel complete (and widely read)." Now pertain this to your story. I have not read it, but I hope that this source of information will help you out a bit.
That helps me quite a bit! Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
No problem! :)
