In 1990, the population of Houston, Texas was 1,637,859. In 1998, the population was 1, 786,691. Predict the population of Houston in 2014.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Work out what percentage it has increased per year

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Work out the 1998 figure as a percent of the 1990 figure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry I'm terrible at math.. I don't know what I am doing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do the 1998 figure divided by the 1990 figure Will be about 1.09

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.004

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did not get that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got it now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I divided the years.. that is why it wasn't right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1786691/1637859 = 1.090869849 So the 1998 is 109% of the original population

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it was a 9.0869849% increase over 8 years

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide by 8 to get 1 year

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then take 1998 away from 2014 and get 16 Then times the number you just got by 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you get 9.09 of an increase

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did the 1998 number divided by the 1990 number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to go sorry, hopefully you can work it out if not click bump and ask someone in the chat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well thank you.
