plz help me ..... dont answer. just explain steps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The ratio of two numbers is 3 to 5. Their sum is 136. Find the two numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{x}{y}=\frac{3}{5}\]\[x+y=136\] If x were 3, and y were 5, 3+5 is 8, so that couldn't be it. To keep the ratio, you can continuously multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same factor. Do that until you find an x and a y that ad up to 136.

3x:5x where x is a constant

can you explain a bit more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the number 136 is split evenly into 8 smaller numbers and let this be x, then 3x+5x must be 136
