-8 3/4 + -11 1/3 = ?

You have to find a common denominator for the fractions.

ya?

I know how to add the fractions but what do i do when the other number is there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, when you find the common denominator, which would have been twelve, and add those, you get13/12. Then you should add the -8 and eleven and get three. But then becasue your fraction was over, you have to bump that number up. You take a whole number out of your fraction, (12/12), and that becomes one, which you add to your 3. Then what is left of the fration, (13/12-12/12=1/12), stays there. Leaving your answer to be 4&1/12.
