Tom buys a new phone service. It costs $20 to install, and then costs $15 a month. Write an equation to show the cost of the phone (y) for any number of months (x).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let x-number of months total cost be y y= 20 + 15x --> because it says "$15 a month" plus fixed cost of $20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, you know it's going to start with y=, becasue that's what we are looking for. And we should know that somewhere in the is going to be the $20. But because the $20 is a one time thing, it doesn't have an variable. Then because x is months, and it's $15 a month, you need 15x. So, in the end, you get y=20+15x. :D
