A triangle with vertices (3,1), (-2, 3) and (-1, -1) exists. Without graphing it, is this triangle a right triangle? Explain why.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to have one of these points that have slope -1 -- m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that will be a perpendicular line vertical

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand what either of you mean.

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

find the slopes between all the points, you should end up with 3 slopes

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

if it was a right triangle one slope would be the opposite reciprocal of the other. For example, if one slope was 2/5 and another was -5/2 it would be a right triangle. If none are like this, it is not a right triangle.

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

the three slopes are: -2/5, -4, and 1/2. Not a right triangle.

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

She asked if it was a RIGHT triangle, obviously three points make a triangle (unless they are along the same line).
